There are some metals on the Earth that are quite rare, and one of them is Cerium. This rare metal is found in minerals like bastnasite, synchysite, zircon, allanite, hydroxyl bastnasite, monazite, and rhabdophane. The oxide of this metal is quite useful and is known as cerium dioxide, cerium oxide, ceria, or simply as ceric oxide. It is basically a yellowish white powder. 

The powdered form of cerium oxide is produced through the processes called calcination. Cerium hydroxide or cerium oxalate is used for this process. Cerium Oxide powder is somewhat hygroscopic in nature, and it also imbibes a little amount of carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere.

The nano form of cerium oxide often exhibits yellow color, which may get darker sometimes. The synthesis of cerium oxide nano particles can be done through the process of precipitation. In this process, cerium nitrate is used as the raw material, whereas for precipitation agent, ammonium acid carbonate is used. 

The powdered form of cerium oxide has numerous applications. When it comes to choosing a coating material for infrared filters then cerium oxide is widely preferred. This powder is also used for coloring plastics. Since cerium oxide is quite resistant to heat, for this reason it is used as alloy coatings. Cerium oxide powder is also quite useful for superconductors; it can be used as buffer layer in this case. Apart from the above mentioned uses, there are many more reasons why cerium oxide and its powdered form is produced.
