Tungsten is an element found by a scientist called Tungsten in the 18th century. It was hence named after him and quickly rose to popularity in the industry of science thanks to its unique properties. It is very commonly used in making light bulbs. The thin filament of wire we see in bulbs is made out of tungsten.

The tungsten metal is combined with many other elements to make it more useful and also add more useful properties to it. Tungsten Disulfide nano particles are particularly used for many purposes. One of the major applications is protection from friction. Layers of tungsten disulfide are applied over machineries to make their surfaces smooth.

Tungsten Helps Protect Machineries From High Temperature!

Tungsten Disulfide also acts an excellent heat insulator. When the chemical is applied over a material it is essentially protected from heat and is able to tolerate high pressure conditions. Since heat and pressure are related due to interaction of molecules, tungsten is the necessary element for pressure and heat protection.

It is also a catalyst for many reactions. Crude oil is treated with tungsten disulfide to filter and purify it. The process is known as hydro curing of crude oil and without this important step petroleum can’t be obtained. The other commercial applications of this metallic nano particle are yet to be discovered. Scientists say that there is to be immense research potential in this area in the coming years.
